AI for Spinning Top Trial Notes

October 20, 2026

As of 2026-10-19 · the AZET team. We offer this maker-authored educational exercise for fun and reference; every top, timing, and trial result below is hypothetical.

Spinning top notes lose their usefulness when interrupted attempts become completed spins or rough stopwatch readings acquire false precision in a summary.

Use an assistant to organize observations and expose gaps. This exercise focuses on what the observer saw, without diagnosing construction or explaining motion from a few numbers.

Define the clock before starting it

Choose an observable start and finish. For this illustrative exercise, timing begins when the launcher's hand visibly leaves the top. It ends when the observer first sees the top lying on its side and no longer rotating. Write down these conventions before collecting any readings.

Also define interruption labels. A top leaving the marked observation area is “left area.” A hand touching it before the finish event is “contact.” If the observer misses the finish, use “end not observed.” These labels explain why a complete duration is unavailable.

Record the top identifier, surface description, launch method, observer, and trial order. Use descriptions you can reproduce, such as the same marked place on the same tray. Do not describe the surface as perfectly level unless that condition has actually been checked.

Keep duration and outcome in separate columns

A number alone cannot describe every attempt. If a top leaves the area at eight seconds, eight seconds is the elapsed time before that interruption. It is not necessarily the full spin duration.

Use columns for elapsed time, outcome, and observation notes. When the finish is observed, label the time as a complete duration. When it is not, preserve the interruption time or leave the duration missing. Avoid replacing missing values with zero; zero would be a measurement with a different meaning.

Choose a recording precision consistent with the exercise. In this hypothetical notebook, the observer records whole seconds. An assistant should not convert an approximate 21-second reading into 21.000 seconds and imply a finer measurement.

A worked set of six hypothetical attempts

Suppose one top is used for all six illustrative trials. The launcher switches from grip A to grip B after trial 3. The launcher supplies descriptions for these local grip labels.

Trial Grip Recorded time Outcome
1 A 18 seconds Complete
2 A 8 seconds Left area; spin continued out of view
3 A 22 seconds Complete
4 B 21 seconds Complete
5 B 25 seconds Complete
6 B No reading Finish not observed

Among completed, timed trials, A has readings of 18 and 22 seconds, averaging 20. B has readings of 21 and 25, averaging 23. Keep those small groups visible beside the averages. The excluded attempts are still part of the record and need their outcome labels.

The three-second difference does not establish that B is better. Each average contains only two completed readings, the groups were attempted in order, and two attempts lack complete timings. Practice, fatigue, or other unrecorded differences remain possible explanations, not measured causes.

A useful next note would propose another clearly labelled session with alternating grip order and the same observation conventions. This proposes further observation without predicting its result.

A usable prompt for cautious summaries

Review my spinning top trial notes using only the supplied observations. Keep trial order and outcome labels. Separate complete durations from interruption times and missing readings. Recalculate any summaries using only the stated eligible rows, and name those rows. Preserve my recording precision. Do not explain motion using unmeasured physical properties or rank a grip from this small exercise. Return a short descriptive summary and the human checks needed before comparing sessions.

Check the draft for hidden changes to eligibility. A response that averages all five numeric entries includes the interrupted eight-second reading and answers a different question. A response that quietly removes trial 6 conceals missing observation. Both need correction.

Verify the event, not just the calculation

Human review starts with the raw notebook. Confirm that “complete” means the same finish event in every row. If two observers used different endings, keep their records separate until the difference is understood.

Then verify units, trial identifiers, and arithmetic. If you used a recording for reference, inspect the relevant start and finish moments yourself. Keep uncertain endings explicit.

Finally, keep the observation separate from its interpretation. In a hypothetical note, “moved outside the marked circle before the end” describes what was seen. “Poor balance” claims a cause the note does not establish. Retaining the first sentence gives the next session something concrete to examine.

FAQ

Should I discard a visibly awkward launch?

Keep it and describe what made it awkward. If you decide it does not meet your launch convention, label that reason explicitly. Do not exclude it merely because its time is disappointing; that would change the meaning of the summary.

Is the longest spin the best summary?

It can describe the longest completed reading in your record, but it says little about the other attempts. Include the number of completed trials and the range of their readings. Avoid presenting a single maximum as typical behavior.

Can I compare two different tops?

You can record them under separate identifiers, but describe the comparison narrowly. Preserve the same timing conventions and note any changed conditions. The notes can show observed differences without establishing which design feature caused them.
