Place Footnotes Where They Help the Reader

As of 2026-10-23 · The AZET team. We operate azet.io and are writing from that perspective. This article is a creative exercise for fun and reference. Its examples are invented, and the suggested AI workflow is an idea to try with a tool you already use, not a statement that AZET provides this capability.

A fictional essay describes a village that names its streets after sounds. The first sentence ends with three note markers. One note explains a word the reader needs immediately; another tells a comic side story; the third repeats the sentence in longer language. The page asks for attention before it has earned it.

For this exercise, AI can help classify those interruptions. The useful question is not how to make the footnotes sound clever. It is what the reader needs at each point in the main text.

Name the job of each note

Copy a paragraph and its notes into a working document. Give every note a temporary label: necessary explanation, supporting reference, optional aside, or repeated material. These are editorial categories for the draft, not universal rules for every kind of publication.

In the invented street essay, the unfamiliar word belongs in the paragraph if the reader cannot understand the next sentence without it. The comic side story can remain optional. Repeated material is a candidate for cutting.

A reference note may need to stay attached to a particular claim. Moving it solely to improve appearance can make the source relationship less clear. Keep that relationship visible while you experiment.

Ask for a reading-path diagnosis

Supply enough surrounding text to show what follows the marker. Without that context, the model may recommend moving an explanation that the next sentence depends on.

Review this fictional paragraph and its notes. Identify what a reader would misunderstand by skipping each note. Suggest whether to integrate, retain, move, or remove it. Explain the effect on the main argument. Preserve the relationship between a reference and the claim it supports; do not invent sources.

The diagnosis should describe a specific consequence. “This note improves flow” is vague. “The reader needs the invented word's meaning before the comparison in sentence two” gives the editor something to verify.

Read two versions aloud

Make one version with the essential explanation in the paragraph and another with it below the page. Read the main text without visiting the notes. Mark the first point where meaning becomes uncertain.

Then read the notes at their markers. Notice whether returning to the sentence requires starting it again. A note inserted midway through a tightly connected phrase may demand more recovery than one placed after a complete thought.

These observations belong to this passage. They do not establish a reading-speed claim or a general rule about every audience. Keep the version that preserves the essay's meaning and intended rhythm.

Avoid building a second essay downstairs

A long side argument can grow until it carries material the main text quietly relies on. If removing a note collapses the argument, reconsider the structure. The note may deserve its own paragraph or section.

For the street essay, imagine a note explaining why one neighborhood rejects sound names entirely. If that disagreement is the essay's central tension, hiding it below the page leaves the main argument incomplete.

Keep optional pleasures optional. A small joke can reward a curious reader without becoming a prerequisite for understanding the conclusion. Record the reason for each retained note so later edits do not restore discarded repetition.

FAQ

Is fewer always better? No. The exercise asks whether each note has a clear job. A source-rich essay may need many notes, while a short creative piece may need very few.

Can AI check whether a citation is accurate? Only supplied source material can support that review here. A plausible-looking citation is not evidence that a source exists or says what the draft claims.

What should I save? Keep the revised passage, its notes, and brief reasons for the placement choices. Recheck them when the surrounding argument changes.

A note from the makers

Our product reference is the maker introduction dated October 3, 2026. That document describes azet.io as a portal centered on the azet AI assistant and records an early-access email waitlist. It also says pricing was unpublished at that time. Those are dated statements from that introduction; this exercise does not establish a later launch, a feature release, or a pricing change.
