AI Assistants and Accessibility: Practical Everyday Uses

Accessibility is one of the areas where AI assistants can make an ordinary day noticeably easier. Turning dense text into plain language, breaking a long task into steps, drafting image descriptions, or restructuring information so it's easier to scan — these are things language models do well, and for many people they remove real friction. This post covers practical uses, honest limits, and how assistants fit alongside, not in place of, established assistive technology.

Practical uses

Plain-language rewrites

Official letters, terms of service, and instructions are often written in difficult language. Ask an assistant: "Rewrite this in plain language at a short-sentence reading level, keeping every requirement and deadline." The second half of that request matters — simplification should not drop obligations.

Summaries with structure

For people who find long blocks of text tiring, a structured summary helps: headings, short bullets, and a "what I need to do" section at the top. Ask for that structure explicitly.

Breaking tasks into steps

"Break this process into numbered steps, one action per step" turns a paragraph of instructions into something easier to follow. You can ask for the steps to include what you'll see on screen after each one, then verify those descriptions against the real interface.

Drafting alt text

If you publish images, an assistant can draft alternative text from a description of the image. Review every draft: good alt text depends on why the image is there, and only you know the context.

Communication support

Assistants can help draft messages, adjust tone, or prepare what to say in an appointment. Some people use them to organize thoughts before a conversation that feels overwhelming.

Limits to know

Limit What it means in practice
Simplification can drop details Check that requirements, numbers, and deadlines survived
Errors in instructions Steps may reference menus or settings that don't exist
Not a replacement for assistive tech Screen readers and established tools remain essential
Not medical or legal advice Use it to prepare questions, not to replace professionals

The first limit is the most important. A plain-language rewrite that quietly removes an exception or a deadline is worse than the original. Ask the assistant to list every requirement in the original, then confirm each appears in the rewrite.

Accessibility of the assistant itself

An assistant is only helpful if its own interface is usable: keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, readable contrast, and text that resizes cleanly. When evaluating any AI product, check those basics. As builders, we consider them a baseline rather than a feature, and we're not making claims about the accessibility of a product that isn't generally available yet.

Privacy considerations

Accessibility uses often involve personal documents — medical letters, benefit forms, bills. Remove identifiers before pasting: names, ID numbers, addresses, and account details. Most rewrites and summaries work just as well with placeholders.

Where AZET stands

We're building azet, an AI assistant at azet.io meant for the practical questions of an ordinary day. As of October 2026 it's in an early-access waitlist that you join by registering an email, and pricing hasn't been published. The uses in this post work with any assistant available today.

FAQ

Can an AI assistant make documents easier to read? Yes — it can rewrite text in plain language and add structure. Always confirm that requirements, numbers, and deadlines survived the rewrite.

Can AI write alt text for my images? It can draft alt text from a description. Review each draft, because good alt text depends on the image's purpose in context.

Does an AI assistant replace a screen reader? No. Established assistive technology remains essential; an assistant can complement it.

Is it safe to paste personal documents for simplification? Remove names, ID numbers, addresses, and account details first. Placeholders usually work just as well.

Is azet accessible? We're not making claims about an unreleased product. As of October 2026 azet is in an early-access waitlist at azet.io.
