Korean Zodiac Animal (Tti) vs Saju: What's the Difference?

October 8, 2026

Maker's note: 기준일 2026-10-03. This post is written from the operators' side by the AZET team (AZET 운영팀), not by a customer. Seowoon's Korean site, seowoongwan.com, is operated by 에이치컴퍼니(사업자등록번호 316-47-00948, 통신판매업 신고 2023-부산강서구-1073). Menu names follow the live site as of October 3, 2026. Saju readings are for fun and reference only — not predictions, and not advice of any kind.

Ask someone in Korea what their 띠 (tti) is and they'll answer instantly: rabbit, dragon, horse. The zodiac animal is one of the most widely known pieces of East Asian calendar culture, and it's a common icebreaker — a quick way to work out someone's age without asking directly. Saju, though, is a much larger system, and the zodiac animal is only one part of it. This post explains how the two relate.

Your tti: one branch of one pillar

The twelve zodiac animals — rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig — correspond to the twelve earthly branches of the traditional calendar. Your tti comes from the branch of your birth year.

In saju, the birth year is only one of four pillars. The month, day, and hour each have their own branch — and their own animal — plus a heavenly stem.

Zodiac animal (tti) Saju
Based on Birth year only Birth year, month, day, and hour
Number of characters 1 branch 8 characters (4 stems, 4 branches)
Who shares it Everyone born in the same zodiac year Far fewer people
Typical use Small talk, age, yearly fortunes Fuller personal readings

That's why two people with the same tti can receive very different saju readings: the other seven characters differ.

A detail that trips people up: the year boundary

In saju, the year traditionally turns at 입춘 (ipchun), the "beginning of spring," which falls in early February — not on January 1 and not necessarily on the Lunar New Year. Someone born in January may therefore have the previous year's animal in a saju chart. Popular usage often glosses over this, so it's common to find that your "saju tti" differs from the one you've always said.

How Koreans use each

The zodiac animal is everyday culture: it appears in small talk, in New Year greetings, and in yearly fortunes organized by animal. Saju is more personal and more occasional — something people look up around a new year, a big decision, or simply out of curiosity. Both are widely enjoyed, and both are generally held lightly.

Keeping both in perspective

Neither the zodiac nor saju decides anyone's personality or future. They're cultural frameworks — shared vocabularies for talking about temperament and timing. Treating them as conversation pieces is how most people engage with them, and that's the spirit we'd encourage.

Where to try a reading

Seowoon (서운관), at seowoongwan.com, is a Korean-language saju service whose catalog banner reads 무료사주 풀이 28종 — "28 kinds of free saju readings." For a full four-pillar reading, start with 도사님 정통사주. For year-focused readings, the saju category lists 2026 올해의운세 (this year's fortune) and 천문관 2027 신년운세 (a 2027 new-year reading). The "other" category also has 사주 사전, a saju dictionary for looking up terms. The site is in Korean; browser translation helps.

FAQ

What is tti? Your Korean zodiac animal, based on the earthly branch of your birth year.

Is my zodiac animal the same as my saju? No. The animal is one branch of the year pillar; saju reads all four pillars — eight characters in total.

Why might my saju year animal differ from what I thought? Saju traditionally turns the year at ipchun in early February, so January births may fall under the previous year's animal.

Can the zodiac or saju predict my future? We don't present them that way. Both are cultural frameworks best enjoyed for fun and reference.

Where can I get a full saju reading? On Seowoon's Korean site, seowoongwan.com — 도사님 정통사주 for a general reading, or 2026 올해의운세 for a year-focused one.
