Don't Know Your Birth Time? What That Means for a Saju Reading
Maker's note: 기준일 2026-10-09. The AZET team (AZET 운영팀) wrote this as the people who operate the product family. Seowoon's Korean site, seowoongwan.com, is run by 에이치컴퍼니(사업자등록번호 316-47-00948, 통신판매업 신고 2023-부산강서구-1073). Menu names follow the site as of October 9, 2026. Saju readings are for fun and reference only, and nothing here is a prediction or advice.
The first thing a saju form asks for is a birth date. The second is a birth time, and that is where many people stall. Hospital records get lost, parents remember "sometime after lunch," and in plenty of families nobody wrote it down at all. This post covers what the birth hour does in a chart, why even a known time can be ambiguous, and what you can reasonably do if yours is a mystery.
What the hour adds
Saju means "four pillars": year, month, day, and hour. The hour is the fourth. Leave it out and you have six characters instead of eight, which is three quarters of the chart.
The traditional day is divided into twelve double-hours, each named after an earthly branch:
| Branch | Period (clock time) | Animal |
|---|---|---|
| 자 | 23:00 to 01:00 | Rat |
| 축 | 01:00 to 03:00 | Ox |
| 인 | 03:00 to 05:00 | Tiger |
| 묘 | 05:00 to 07:00 | Rabbit |
| 진 | 07:00 to 09:00 | Dragon |
| 사 | 09:00 to 11:00 | Snake |
| 오 | 11:00 to 13:00 | Horse |
| 미 | 13:00 to 15:00 | Sheep |
| 신 | 15:00 to 17:00 | Monkey |
| 유 | 17:00 to 19:00 | Rooster |
| 술 | 19:00 to 21:00 | Dog |
| 해 | 21:00 to 23:00 | Pig |
Because each slot is two hours wide, you do not need the minute. "Around ten in the morning" is enough to land in the 사 period. The hour stem is then derived from the day stem by a fixed rule, so the reader only needs the branch.
In interpretation, the hour pillar is conventionally linked to later life, to children, and to the more private side of a person. Those are symbolic associations within the tradition, not observations about any individual.
Why a known time can still be fuzzy
Three practical wrinkles catch people out.
Local solar time. Korea's standard time is set to the 135 degrees east meridian, while Seoul sits near 127 degrees. Clock noon in Seoul therefore arrives roughly half an hour before the sun is highest. Many Korean readers shift the table by about thirty minutes to compensate, so that the 자 period runs from about 23:30 to 01:30. Others use clock time as is. A birth at 09:10 is 진 under one convention and still 진 under the other, but a birth at 09:10 versus 09:40 near a boundary can flip.
Daylight saving. Korea observed daylight saving time in 1987 and 1988, and in several earlier years as well. Someone born in a summer of those years has a recorded time an hour ahead of standard time. A careful calculator or reader accounts for it; a careless one does not.
The midnight question. The 자 period straddles midnight. Schools disagree on whether a birth between 23:00 and 00:00 belongs to the next day's pillar. If you were born late at night, expect to see this choice offered as a setting, and expect different results depending on it.
If you were born outside Korea, the same logic applies with your own location: what matters in the traditional method is local time where you were born, including any daylight saving in force.
If you truly do not know
You have a few honest options.
- Read three pillars. Most services allow "time unknown." The year, month, and day pillars still give the day stem, the seasonal context, and the decade cycles, which is the bulk of what a general reading discusses.
- Narrow it down. A two-hour window is all you need. Ask relatives whether it was before breakfast, around the midday meal, or after dark. Old photos, a baby book, or a birth certificate from the hospital sometimes carry the time.
- Compare neighbouring slots. If you know it was "early afternoon," read both the 오 and 미 versions and see what differs. Often it is less than you would expect.
One thing we would steer away from is paying for "rectification," where someone claims to deduce your true birth time from life events. It assumes the system's accuracy in order to prove an input to the system, which is circular. As a parlour game it is harmless. As a paid service presented with confidence, it deserves scepticism.
Keeping it in proportion
It is easy to feel that a missing hour makes a reading worthless. We would turn that around. A saju reading is a cultural practice to enjoy and a source of prompts for reflection. Three pillars supply plenty of prompts. A fourth adds detail, but none of it changes the basic status of the exercise, and none of it decides anything about your life.
Trying it on Seowoon
Seowoon (서운관), the Korean saju service in the AZET family, lives at seowoongwan.com. The general reading 도사님 정통사주 is where most people begin. For parents who do have a carefully recorded time for a child and are curious, the site also lists 자녀사주. Pages are in Korean, so use browser translation, and have your birth date ready in the solar calendar unless you know it was recorded in the lunar one.
FAQ
Can I get a saju reading without my birth time? Yes. A reading can be made from the year, month, and day pillars. It will leave out the hour pillar and whatever a reader would say about it.
How exact does the time need to be? Within a two-hour slot. Precision matters mainly when the birth fell near a slot boundary.
Should I adjust for the thirty-minute offset in Korea? Conventions differ. If your time is near a boundary, look at both versions.
Does daylight saving affect the chart? It can. If daylight saving was in force when and where you were born, the recorded clock time is an hour ahead of standard time.
Does a missing hour make the reading wrong? It makes it less detailed. Either way, a reading is for fun and reference, not a forecast.
